The Gardner Edgerton High School junior varsity softball team had a sizable victory on the road April 17, nearly shutting out Shawnee Mission Northwest in game one, and allowing the Cougars just two runs in game two.
In game one, the Blazers started out strong, scoring six runs in the first inning. That momentum continued through the first three innings as the Blazers scored 22 runs. Madison Crowder led the team in game one, going 4-4 and scoring three runs. Ava Yokley led the Blazer defense from the mound, giving up only five hits and one run in three innings. The Blazers would go on to win game one 22-1.
In game two, the Blazers’ offense started off a little slow, but their bats would heat up as the game went on. Karsen Schumaker led the offense going 3-4, with two runs scored. Ella Oswald added a blast to right field that she turned into an inside-the-park home run. Natalie Roberts led the Blazers from the mound going six innings with six strikeouts, five hits and allowing just two runs. Rylee Sherwood helped lead the defense with some great plays from centerfield. The Blazers would close out game two in six innings, 14-2.
With the win, the junior varsity is 12-2 on the season. The team were back in action Monday against Shawnee Mission South.
