Grand Star Elementary students present English Learners Program

Students shared their love for the English Learners Program at the Monday, Jan. 9 school board meeting.

They first spoke in their home languages of Swahili and Spanish before speaking in English. The three students were from Ethiopia, Guatemala and Mexico.

The program represents 18 countries and 11 languages. 74 students from Kindergarten through 4th grade are enrolled in the program.

The three students shared their favorite parts of the program were the various culture celebrations because they learned more about their classmates had fun. Events used as examples were the “Lao Water Festival”, “Dia De Los Muertos”, the Ethiopian “Coffee Ceremony” that is used as a sign of respect and friendship and “Kid’s Day”.

Jenny Becker, ELL teacher, Colby Kromminga, 4th grade teacher and Principal Corina Ouellette accompanied the students.
