Johnson County approves raised speed limits on unincorporated roads

Johnson County Commissioners approved raising the speed limit on 13 road segments in unincorporated parts of the county, Thursday June 23. Jeff Foss, Johnson County Public works, said the 13 segments met the criteria of raising the speed limits to 40 or 45mph and that 85 percent of people who drive these areas drive faster than the posted 35mph speed limit.

City parks reviewed for improvements

Three city parks were looked at for needed improvements during a budget policy presentation at the Tuesday June 21 Gardner City Council meeting. Matt Wolff, finance director, presented the figures on Veterans Park, Stone Creek and Winwood Park as part of the 2023-2024 Budget Policy and said they hadn’t been updated in 20 years.

Snow Cones with Gardner Police

Over 500 snow cones were served to local residents who came out to support the Gardner Police Department Thursday June 9 at the Dollar General on Moonlight Road. The family friendly event welcomed everyone with a patrol car to see and touch, a drone and patrol bicycle.

Lynne Hermansen The Gardner Historical Museum shared coffee, pastries and trail history on June 1st with new Gardner Chamber CEO, Jason Lieb, and business members of the community. The event was in anticipation for the new exhibit “Looking Back at Gardner Lake”, on the history of Gardner Lake that opened Friday, June 17.

Petition for City of Clearfield denied by Douglas County

Residents of unincorporated southwest Johnson County and southeast Douglas County met for a public hearing on the possible formation of the City of Clearfield. Those that addressed the Douglas County commissioners Wednesday, June 15 in a three and a half hour public hearing were mostly from Douglas County and were opposed to losing their rural, farm lifestyle in Douglas County outside Eudora, Vinland and Baldwin City.

Pride event attracts 200 attendees for second year

Over 200 people attended the second annual Gardner Kansas Pride Parade and family friendly festivities on Saturday, June 18. The parade went down Main Street to Daylight Donuts and back to the Johnson County Fairgrounds at 10 a.m.
